The Restaurant sits where you would put a restaurant if you were given this piece of land. It faces the water, and the tables carry on outside onto the terrace. The kitchen cooks local and continental food. The lake supplies a good deal of it.
Eating here
Lake Victoria is a tilapia and Nile perch fishery, and fish is worth ordering if you are only eating here once. Beyond that the menu runs local and continental, which in practice means you can feed a table where one person wants something familiar and another wants something of the place.
Tables outside are the better choice once the sun has come off them.
The Victoria Bar
The Victoria Bar is the indoor room — arched windows, a dark wooden counter, armchairs you end up in for longer than you meant. There is a second bar out by the pool for the hours when nobody wants to put shoes on.
Dinner outside
Dinner can be set up away from the restaurant, on the sand or out on the jetty over the water. It takes arranging and cannot be decided on the night, so mention it when you book. It suits honeymooners and anyone marking an anniversary.
For groups the same applies in reverse. A long table is easy with notice and awkward without it. If you are bringing a team to the island, tell us how many are eating and when.
Before or after
Most people arrive at dinner having spent the day outside, on the water, on the sand, or on a quad bike. Some arrive having done nothing at all, which the kitchen also respects.
